Here are TWO hands on activities to help introduce or reinforce the concept of
compound words! Teacher prep is time well spent for years of use. Just copy onto cardstock, laminate and cut the pieces and introduce in small groups to place later in a literacy center. A TEACHER SUGGESTIONS PAGE details ways to use this product in your classroom.
ACTIVITY 1 is a set of 16 puzzle pieces that fit together to form 8 compound words. Answer cards provided in color or black and white are excellent concrete visuals to support students. Students match the puzzle pieces and find its corresponding picture card. Students record their answers on the RIDDLES ANSWER PAGE. The words are: rainbow, cupcake, mailbox, raincoat, snowman, starfish, sunglasses and thunderstorm. Two follow up fill in the blank printables provide extra practice and two more identical printables in your preference of color or black and white, displays word parts with 2 columns to draw a line to make a compound word.
ACTIVITY 2 is a set of 8 riddles whose answers are compound words. The word cards come in your preference of color or black and white. Students read the riddle card and find the picture/word answer card. The words are: grasshopper, toothbrush, teacup, football, eyelash, cookbook, railroad and scarecrow. Answers are then recorded on the RIDDLES ANSWER PAGE that can be cut in half vertically to save copy paper.
A follow-up dotted lined worksheet is provided for students to construct their own sentences using the same riddle compound words.
