Coordinates. Plotting Coordinates. Coordinate Geometry. Distance Formula. Midpoint Formula.
The City Resource Coordinate Geometry Project requires students to answer the inquiry question, How does access to resources create a stronger community?
Within your community there are many different resources that help your community to prosper and grow. When major decisions are made regarding the location of new resources there is an extensive amount of research done before any construction begins. Community members, government officials, and city planners will sit down with a grid or map of the community and decide the location for the new resource that will best benefit the community. One important aspect considered is the actual distance for the new resource from existing resources. Community sustainability depends highly on the location of its resources.
Students will be required to plot a list of resources on a coordinate grid and find distances and midpoints using coordinate geometry. Students will make a decision where to locate a playground based on distances from other resources. Students will relate their findings to show how the location of resources impacts sustainability of community.
