A fun and creative exploration of culture through literature!
CULTURE GLOBE-Creative Independent Novel Project-Exploring World Cultures

This novel study project begins with the question, “Why explore other cultures?”

The answer: Because when we do, we embrace diversity, excite curiosity, and expand global awareness!

Students are provided with a list of 20 books about various world cultures.

After choosing a book, students are directed to watch the Ted Talk delivered by Nigerian novelist, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, “The Danger of a Single Story.”

There are 10 questions that students respond to after the video.

This preliminary activity provides a great opportunity to impress on students the importance of understanding other cultures.

The activity that students complete upon finishing their novel is the “Culture Globe.”

Students receive 12 templates on which they respond to prompts about the author, characters, and culture depicted in their book.

Some prompts require students to include cited quotations.

Students are directed to decorate the templates, cut them out, fold, staple, etc. (detailed instructions are included with pictures….It’s easy).

What they end up with is a globe. It’s actually a dodecahedron. (And yes, I checked with my geometry teaching friend on that one!)

I have kids assemble the globes during class while having them share their thoughts about the book with classmates. We then display the diverse globes by hanging them from the classroom ceiling.

Kids love this project, and they learn much about the danger of a single story, world cultures, and the importance of embracing diversity.
