3 ENGAGING CREATIVE WRITING ACTIVITIES

HELP STUDENTS OVERCOME WRITER'S BLOCK

INCLUDES DIGITAL ACTIVITIES FOR GOOGLE DRIVE®

How to use this resource:

Tap into creative potential and inspire students with words, sentence starters, and other interactive writing prompts to overcome writer's block in the classroom.

This resource includes three engaging creative writing activities for middle school and high school English Language Arts:

  • Provide students with the first line to their creative piece using the "Sentence Starter" Creative Writing Activity.
  • Nourish students' developing ideas using the "Word Association" Creative Writing Activity, inspired by Ray Bradbury's Zen in the Art of Writing.
  • Practice proper integration of quotations using the "Building Narrative" Creative Writing Activity.

For each activity, you can allot a time limit to encourage the free flow of ideas; I like to stress to students that their writing doesn't need to be "perfect" or even grammatically correct - as a rough draft, these activities can be left as-is or edited for future use in a writing portfolio.

This resource can be used with your creative writing curriculum or for practice with narrative writing in your English Language Arts classroom. I have also had success using these activities with AP Language and Composition students as they develop narrative essays in preparation for the AP exam.

These activities are also suitable for distance learning and 1:1 Classrooms. Simply follow the instructions within the resource.

This resource is included in Mondays Made Easy's Ultimate Creative Writing Unit. This bundle provides 3 weeks of complete curriculum for your Creative Writing unit and teaches students how to establish setting, develop dialogue, integrate quotations, and overcome writer's block. It includes over 50 writing prompts, interactive activities, mini-lessons, and more!
