CROSSING BOK CHITTO, A CHOCTAW TALE OF FRIENDSHIP AND FREEDOM
by Tim Tingle

In the early 1800s, a plantation with many slaves lay on one side of the Bok Chitto River in Mississippi. On the other side of the river lay a nation of Indian people, the Choctaws. What events could occur that would bring these people together?

You would need to ask Choctaw storytellers who have kept the story alive for 200 years. Tim Tingle is one. He will tell you about a normal Choctaw girl named Martha Tom whose life was changed forever while she was picking blackberries and stumbled into a secret slave church service. The storyteller will tell you how a secret pathway across the river led to a miracle that transformed the lives of seven black slaves the night Martha Tom became a hero.

Now, Tim Tingle has written the words of a story in a picture book that you will want to read again and again.
