This is a challenge based on the game of Scrabble. In Scrabble, when you add a letter to the beginning or end of another word, it is called a 'hook'. e.g. Starting with the word AT, various letters can be added to the beginning, to make CAT, FAT, HAT etc., or E can be added to the end to make ATE.
This page includes several examples, with starting words ranging from 2 to 4 letters. The back of the sheet has space to add other words.
I have deliberately chosen NOT to include an answer key for this. The purpose is to get students thinking about the words and letters, not to complete a definitive list. There are many words that are acceptable in Scrabble that are not everyday words and that students would not be expected to know. The discussion of what words were found and what words are acceptable is part of the process.
