This assignment is a way to use the appeal of CSI-style forensic investigation shows to get students involved in close reading. It breaks reading down into stages (including multiple readings of a text and focused analysis of a specific aspect of the text.) and scaffolds students creating a solid literary analysis of a text.
It could be used as a stand alone lesson, but it is really an approach to multiple texts so that students develop independent skill through repetition. Students learn about the power of rereading and the importance of focused reading. It has both literary and informational text prompts so it can be used in all aspects of the Common Core curriculum and the focus of the reading is up to you (or the student when they are proficient)! You can focus on setting or figurative language or argument or anything! I like this assignment, and lots of kids do too, because it brings in the format of a science lab report to the work, rather than simply reading and answering questions.
This download includes a CSI Report form for students to fill out, directions (in the form of an office memo) for completing the assignment, and a teacher's guide.
This assignment can meet various CCSS depending on how you use it, so I won't list them.
