Description

***THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN UPDATED WITH A GOOGLE SLIDES INTERACTIVE VERSION INCLUDED. REDOWNLOAD IF YOU HAVE IT ALREADY***

Nothing like a good criminal investigation to liven up number sense! In this project, students will work in teams to investigate the culprit of six fictional thefts. The criminal has left six messages, layered with algebra. Teams will work to build a case and present their findings to the court. Hopefully they are convincing enough to win the verdict.

The puzzle solving hook causes many different students to engage in solving traditionally mundane problems. Be the cool teacher :-)

In this 20 page document you will be given a mapping to the Content Standards, an outline for how to implement the project, and six crime scene puzzles.

This puzzle is mapped to Common Core Standards and includes problems featuring the following skills: Converting between Ratio, Percent and Decimal, Similar Figure, Scale Factors, Percent Word Problems, Simple Interest

An answer key has been added to the end of the file for your convenience.

Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. Examples: simple interest, tax, markups and markdowns, gratuities and commissions, fees, percent increase and decrease, percent error.
Represent proportional relationships by equations. For example, if total cost 𝘵 is proportional to the number 𝘯 of items purchased at a constant price 𝘱, the relationship between the total cost and the number of items can be expressed as 𝘵 = 𝘱𝘯.
Identify the constant of proportionality (unit rate) in tables, graphs, equations, diagrams, and verbal descriptions of proportional relationships.
Decide whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship, e.g., by testing for equivalent ratios in a table or graphing on a coordinate plane and observing whether the graph is a straight line through the origin.
Recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities.
