The objective and question for this lesson is, "What makes you a unique individual?" After the lesson, students can be asked to write the answer to this question.
This CUBE AND STACK Puzzle consists of 5 knowledge cubes. Students work individually or in teams of 5 to cut out, construct, and stack their cubes so that corresponding information creates a picture of Human Heredity. Genes, allelles, Human genome project, and chromosomes are keys to stacking the cubes correctly. Other important information about Human Heredity is presented, and teachers may decide to extend the lesson using this information (traits, phenotype, genotype, population geneticist, salaries, etc).
My preference is to have each student make their own knowledge cube and contribute their cube to the team. Some teachers have the first class of the day make the cubes, then subsequent classes use the cubes created. I've saved cubes for subsequent lessons, and after school help sessions, too.
Its an easy manipulative lesson for you to set up, and its a ho-hum crasher for students. It is minds on and hands on so students spend more time trying to understand heredity. Homework may not be popular in your school, but researching the human genome project, hemophilia, sickle cell anemia, or other genetic disorders are all possibilities. Also, you might request that students label the parts of the chromosome before constructing knowledge cube 4.
