Learning the stages of cell cycle is a central objective of Biology. The Mitosis Puzzle will teach teamwork and cell division. Students will not be ho-hum on this day. Interphase thru cytokinesis are parts of the activity.
Each person in a team of four is responsible for creating a knowledge cube. After building the cube, the team works together to stack their individual cubes so that information about each cell phase is discovered. Once the CUBE AND STACK PUZZLE is correctly assembled, student teams complete a question and answer sheet. Teacher answers and correct puzzle stack are included.
Some students are better at creating their knowledge cubes while others were better at figuring out how to stack the puzzle correctly. We used lunch trays to store the knowledge cubes for the duration of the learning, and many students wanted to take them home to help them study for the test.
This activity takes one to two class periods (55 min) to complete depending on the ability of the class. Sometimes, I have students create a fifth Knowledge Cube. Sometimes every student makes one cube per day for four days. A brief lecture about each cube is given prior to cube building.
Your purchase includes a model lesson plan for a 55 min class, 4 Knowledge Cube templates to copy, teacher directions, student directions (listed on each template), student objective (listed on each template), a student reflection sheet, a teacher answer key, and a CUBE AND STACK PUZZLE key.
