These no-prep printables are perfect for using WITH students to review various math skills and standards (such as addition, subtraction, or multiplication) OR as an assessment tool for the same skills! You can also use them as interactive practice with multiple students on an interactive whiteboard. The best part about these CUBES math problem solving pages is that the students have to show and explain their thinking—metacognition (thinking about one’s own thinking) is CRITICAL to deepening kids’ depth of knowledge of math concepts. Each problem is presented at two different levels of difficulty (more challenging versions are labeled “A” on the bottom and less challenging are labeled “B”) to allow for differentiation within your class. I have used these with my second graders but they could easily be used with first-graders and/or third-graders as well.
If you aren't familiar with the CUBES strategy for problem solving, see below:
C-circle important numbers
U-underline the question(s)
B-box math/action words
E-evaluate next steps
S-solve and check
These CUBES math problem solving pages also directly align with Common Core standards in all grades:
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
Model with mathematics.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
Attend to precision.
Look for and make use of structure.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
I am working on finishing and posting multiple sets of these CUBES math problem solving packets that increase in complexity and progress in a logical sequence through the standards, so if you enjoy this freebie check back soon for more expanded sets!
