CUBES is an amazing method of breaking down word problems into understandable pieces of information. I have taken the method to create printables to help you with your small group instruction.
Here is how I suggest using the printables:
Cut out the circles and laminate for durability. In small group instruction, have the pile of cards face down. When working on a word problem, have students choose a card. The card that the student chooses is the part of CUBES that he or she is responsible for leading the rest of the group through.
You may also wish to print, cut out, and place on your bulletin board for easy reference. Or you may just want to print them out and glue into students' journals.
I have included TWO unique versions in this ZIP file. The first one is what I would use with students who take a standardized tests on paper. That file will walk students through circling/underlining/boxing in parts of the word problem right on paper.
The second file is going to be beneficial for students who take a standardized test on a computer. Learning to track information from one place to another is difficult and requires a LOT of practice. Therefore, this version instructs students to copy information in an organized manner on to scrap paper. It still follows the fabulous CUBES method of course, but is tweaked to fit the needs of these students as well.
I hope this can help you through your math instruction this year. Please leave feedback if you download! :)
