In this product you will receive 20 problems. Some of the problems are single step and some are multiple step problems. The goal of this activity is to teach students how to use the problem solving strategy CUBES. There is a space on each work mat to show their work. All spaces should be filled in (other than the E box, not every problems has unnecessary information to eliminate).
Students will be asked to:
Circle the important information
Underline the question
Box the math action words
Eliminate unnecessary information
Solve and check
They will be asked to write the information in the boxes next to the primary workspace. That way students are intentional when solving the word problems.
There is also a space where students need to write the answer in a full sentence below. This is also there to promote intentional practice when solving word problems.
On slide 5 there is also a cheat sheet for the students. There are two per page. These can be laminated and left in student math stations or glued in a math journal.
On Slide 6 there is a blank work mat where you can either write in your own problems by hand or have students create their own problems to have classmates solve.
Slides 7-26 are all math word problems for the students to solve. You can print them out individually or print them in a packet. This would be great morning work, activities to do in small group rotations, whole class work, or partner work.
