Educators are constantly searching for reading strategies to meet all children's needs. The CUBS (Children Ultimately Being Successful) Reading Readiness Program provides high quality literacy instruction to meet the needs of all students' learning styles at their own individual success levels. CUBS is designed to bridge the achievement gap between pre-readiness and readiness skills. There are numerous activities that can be used in literacy centers.
The lesson plans are designed to provide additional support for children through highly interactive and age appropriate hands on activities. The activities address all of the learning modalities - auditory, visual, tactile and kinesthetic. Teaching all modalities ensures the children opportunities to enhance speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.
The CUBS Reading Readiness Program consists of two stages. This is stage 1. It consist of 12 lesson plans. Two alphabet letters are introduced in each lesson plan. The sequence used for the introduction of the alphabet letters is based on Orton-Gillingham's research. The Stage 1 lesson plans provide children the opportunities to learn the name of each alphabet letter, recognize each letter in both capital and lower case forms, write the letters and learn the sound(s) of each alphabet letter. Throughout the lessons, there is continuous review of the previous letters introduced.
Resource materials needed for CUBS Stage 1 are alphabet books that target each letter. Any alphabet books can be sued for these lesson plans, but I used Alphakids Alphabet books by Sundance Publishing Department. There are 10 sessions per lesson - a total of 120 sessions. Please view the sample lesson. I have offered the entire lesson 2 for a sample of this program.
I developed this reading readiness program for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten. This program was reviewed and is scientifically researched based. It was approved and accepted by Reading First and placed on a national list.
Please view the sample. You will be able to see an entire lesson plan to get an idea of what this program offers. There is a phonemic guide at the end of each lesson.
CUBS is not only for prekindergarten and kindergarten. It is for any child who needs more reinforcement and additional suppport of prerequisite skills. This program will boost every child's confidence and self-esteem. They will love participating in the activities.
