In my writing class, we use this in our 3rd phase of the writing process: Editing.
Our first stage is rough Draft, then "Revision" where we add, cut, elaborate, add descriptive words. Then comes Editing.
In each phase I tell the students to only focus on what their specific job/task is at that point in time.
When editing, we use the C.U.P.S strategy which allows the kids to focus on 4 major categories of editing - Capitalisation, Understanding, Punctuation, and Spelling.
I have the students show their corrections in FOUR DIFFERENT colors based on the categories. This helps the students and the teacher learn what that student or the class needs to work on (if they see a lot of capitalisation mistakes, you can work on capitalisation, etc.)
Display this is your room for students to clearly see.
