Just as a reminder, glued sounds are sounds that sound differently in that they do not always sound like the vowels in regular CVC words.
For example: hang does not sound like /h//a//n//g/. The a in ang does not sound like the short a in cat. Also they are a group of letters like a word family that are always found together in words.
If you teach Wilson Foundations then glued sound words are taught separately from CVC tappable words.
The students match the trains to make words. The engine is the beginning sound and the train car is the word family or medial and ending sound. In the last column they can draw a small picture to show that they know what the word says.
If you teach Wilson Fundations in first grade, these words are taught in the 2nd Edition.
After they match the words, the students pick 3 words and write sentences for each word to demonstrate vocabulary knowledge. This page is optional. It is in a second slide and can be run off and then placed on the back of the student’s worksheet. There is also directions for the students to read their words and sentences to another student or to the teacher, then the listener signs their name on the sheet. This promotes independence, encourages accountability and responsible learners who take ownership of their work.
1. There over 350 sets of train cards to laminate and cut a part. I usually place these in a sentence strip holder for children to match up according to the vowel or word family we are learning or which they may need to reinforce.
2. A student worksheet to write words with specific directions.
An optional sheet for students to write sentences using 3 of the words created.
4. Blank sets of train cars if you would like to create your own words.
My first grade “kiddos” enjoyed using this Word Work station during Literacy Stations/Daily 5 to reinforce the phonemic/spelling skills taught.
