The aim of this activity is to develop students’ understanding of onset and rime, spelling and vocabulary.
Students look at the shaded letters and create new words using these letters. Letters DO NOT need to be touching to create words.
The following rimes are included and are color coded:
-ab -eb -ib -ob -ub
-ad -ed -id -og -ud
-ag -eg -ig -op -ug
-am -em -in -ot -um
-an -en -ip -un
-ap -et -it -up
Ten boxes have been allowed for each word family. However, the number of words that can be found will vary. They will not always find ten words.
As the activity is intended for lower grades, I do not recommend using timers or having students play against each other. The goal is to develop confidence in word building.
