This initial sound sort activity is the perfect addition to a word work center. Students will look at pictures of CVC words, isolate the initial sound and sort it accordingly. It also comes with an answer page so students can check their own work. Eight letters and 24 pictures are included.
I designed this activity for my kindergartners, but it could easily be adapted for first grade. In Texas we use the TEKS. Here are the TEKS that this activity meets:
Section (b) Knowledge and Skills
(2) Reading/Beginning Reading Skills/Phonological Awareness. Students display phonological awareness. Students are expected to
(H) Isolate the initial sound in one-syllable spoken words; and
3) Reading/Beginning Reading Skills/Phonics. Students use the relationships between letters and sounds, spelling patterns, and morphological analysis to decode written English. Students are expected to:
(A) identify the common sounds that letters represent;
