When learning to read, some children have difficulty sounding out unfamiliar words because they are focusing on meaning rather than letter sounds. Using nonsense words allows the child to strictly focus on the letter sounds.
As reading progresses, being able to decode short nonsense words will improve a child’s ability to decode longer unfamiliar words as well!
These flash cards are great for use with individual children who may need some extra help. They are also great for small groups who are just beginning to read!
In this file you will find 300 flash cards! 60 flash cards for each of the vowels!
Having so many to choose from will allow you to choose different ones each time you “test” a child. This will help you to decide whether a child is able to decode the words or is memorizing them. You may also choose cards according to the beginning and ending sounds. This is helpful when a child struggles with certain letter sounds.
