Learning Objective

Students will demonstrate and apply spelling knowledge by building CVC words.

Description

These CVC word building activities are an easy to implement, differentiated tool for your phonics centers. Your students can use these mats to practice building CVC words throughout the entire year! Using these word building activities, your students will practice sounding out words and blending CVC words through building 125 words!

How do students use these CVC word building mats?
On each CVC word building mat, students will do four things.
✅ Identify the picture.
✅ Read or write the word in a sentence.
✅ Build the CVC word (using letter tiles, magnetic letters, etc.).
✅ Write the word (using dry or wet erase markers).

How many words are included in this resource?
There are 125 CVC words included in your download.

How is this resource differentiated?
Your download comes with two options. You could choose to print and implement one of the following options or provide students with both versions!

Option 1: Mats with Words
On these mats, students will see the word written on the page and used in a sentence. These are great for beginning readers, ESL students, or tutoring.

Option 2: Mats without Words
On these mats, students will identify the word using the picture and sentence missing the word. These are great for students reviewing the phonics skills or advanced learners.

Are the word building mats available in black and white?
While these mats may be more appealing to your students in color, you can save your ink by printing the mats in black and white. Some sentences may include color words, but they are not essential to the mats.

Do I need to use all the words?
No, you can choose to place a set of the mats in your centers and rotate them yourself. You may also find that some of the words may be more difficult for your students, so you might consider leaving some of the mats out until your students are ready.

Do you have more word building activities?
Yes! I offer similar word building mats for many phonics skills such as CVCe words, blends, and digraphs. If you are looking for a more simplistic version of this center, consider checking out my Magnetic Missions resources. These phonics centers are similar in that students will be building words, but the sentence and handwriting portion is not included on the cards.

Do you have any other resources for CVC words?
Yes, you can find more resources such as CVC words worksheets or clip cards in my store.
