This activity is perfect for small group work or an independent center. Print and laminate the word building mats and letter tiles. After cutting out the letter tiles for each mat, store them in a plastic bag or small container. Each set of tiles is specific to a mat, and the mats and tiles are framed in colored borders to tell them apart. For each mat, there is a worksheet for children to write the words they made on the mat. There are 3 mats, a set of letter tiles for each mat, and 3 worksheets for short i words.
This set also includes picture and word cards that can be used as a matching game or just match the words to the pictures for extra practice with reading the words. I have included background pages for you to print on the backs of the matching cards, if desired. It’s best to print these cards on cardstock or heavy weight paper so the graphics don’t show through to the back. I hope you find this activity useful in your classroom. Thanks so much for downloading, and Happy Teaching!
Teacher Tip: It would be helpful to the children to make sure they recognize the pictures. For example, make sure they know that the picture is “lip”, and not “mouth”.
