Teaching students to sound out letters in the early stages of reading is a prelude to decoding and blending of CVC words that will eventually help build reading fluency. The purpose of this activity is to reach those students who are still reliant upon pictures to read CVC words. We all have those students who don't quite realize they can actually read already! This activity is meant to reach those students who just need a little something extra and a boost of confidence. Being able to focus in on letter sound knowledge to blend and read words without a matching picture to fall back on, but still with the support of an ability to check for accuracy.
This packet includes 3 sets of 12 CVC word puzzles with a summer theme. Pictures that are cute, colorful and will keep your students engaged! Each set also contains a student response sheet for students to record their CVC words if you choose to use this as independent or small group work. Each set also has an answer key provide for quick and easy paper checks!
Laminate each puzzle for durability. Hold puzzle pieces together with a paper clip and place in plastic zip lock bags labeled by set and then by theme. Alternatively, store puzzle cards in small labeled envelopes.
