I volunteer in my daughter’s K-1 special education classroom.
We designed this activity to integrate sensory needs with tapping to spell CVC words.
The children completed this activity in a small group of 3-4 students with some support. It was designed to tap and spell 5 words and add more if needed.
The pictures were introduced and together the students went over the names of each picture and tapped them out to reinforce this skill.
Then the pictures were placed in the sensory basket, which is filled with foam packing peanuts.
Each child took a turn pulling out a picture and tapped to spell the word together and then wrote it on the sheet/s.
Then students read the words to each other.
We also used the product “Tap Out Those CVC Words” for those students who were stronger with spelling as a way to differentiate instruction.
This game can be completed independently in a station depending on the independence of your students.
It can also be done whole group with a basket on each table or area and then switch baskets.In this case you would have to run off more copies of the pictures

★ Frames to write the CVC words which are numbered in groups of 5 except for the
last page, which has 6 spaces for answers.
This is also a great intervention or RTI activity.
1.Place the first 10 cards numbered 1-10 in the basket.
2.Pick a card out of the foam peanuts.
3.Look at the card and tap out the sounds.
4.Write each sound you hear in the boxes.
5.Make sure beginning sound for card 1 starts in the box with the 1
6.Keep picking, tapping and writing until all 10 cards are completed.
