This strategy has been in my bag of tricks for a long time. However, it has just received a makeover. If you teach emerging readers, you know that hearing sounds in the correct sequence is crucial for students to read and write. CVC words are a great place to start.
This little product includes the contents for six mini booklets of picture cards- one for each short vowel a,e,i,o, and u plus a booklet with mixed vowel pictures. You can use them as flashcards but I prefer to make them into little books so students can work their way through each vowel. Each booklet includes 12 different picture cards, numbered 1-12. To match each booklet, you can take a muffin tin marked 1-12 and put magnetic letters to spell each picture card in the corresponding muffin cup. Students can then work their way through each booklet, identifying the picture, finding the matching letters, and determining how to sequence them so it spells the CVC word. I have my students assemble the word on a cookie tray that has been marked with Elkonin Boxes.
My students love using this activity. We have used it as a small group at the guided reading table, in pairs, at centers, and with parent volunteers.
