Competent readers have a number of strategies they are able to call on when reading.
One strategy students should be using is to decode (work out) tricky/unknown words in a text. Breaking words by chunking letters involves students breaking words into manageable ‘chunks’ to sound out, rather than sounding out each individual letter. Breaking CVC words into onset and rime helps students develop skills to chunk unknown words when reading.
The stronger students are with word families and general letter/sound recognition, the more successful they will be in decoding and breaking words apart when reading.
This pack will help your students to practice breaking CVC words into chunks (onset and rime) and help develop decoding skills when reading.
The follow up sentences will give your students the opportunity to practice using the words in context.
Word Families included:
at an ap ag am ad
et ed en
it in ip ig
ot op og
ut un ug
