This tool can be used to segment and blend simple CVC patterns as you are teaching your early learners to build strong phonemic awareness skills. Young readers are very kinesthetic and tactile learners. You will have the students use blocks as you give them a simple CVC word. The students can place the blocks according to the sounds they hear and say in the word. For example, the teacher will say the word cat, they follow with the sounds |c| (place the block at the top of the arm), |a| (place the block in the middle of the arm, and |t|(place the block at the bottom of the arm). The best thing about this activity is that you are then teaching them how to use this tool to transfer the sound segmenting to their actual arm for when you are reading words in context. If they need their arm as a kinesthetic and tactile tool, it is always there! Follow us on @idahokindersisters on istagram to watch our videos of this in action!
