Need a center for practicing and reviewing the beginning, middle and/or ending sounds in CVC words?
This pack includes all you need for a quick center activity that covers all 5 vowels (plus 2 long vowel cards for each vowel)
It requires little to no prep on your part, but is sure to keep your students engaged as they practice identifying sounds in fun kid-friendly full-color pictures! Because this pack can be modified in so many ways (with no 'extra work' on your part required) it is perfect for classrooms that have students at different ability and skill levels!
This Pack Includes:
*Directions for use/set-up with photos
*51 Pencil Clipping Cards For Identifying Beginning, Middle &/or Ending Sound (short and long vowels) broken up as so:
~9 cards for short a, 2 for long a
~8 cards for short e, 2 for long e
~8 cards for short i, 2 for long i
~8 cards for short o, 2 for long o
~8 cards for short u, 2 for long u
*‘Directions’ Pencil to display at the center or keep in a bag w/ the cards
*B&W printable for center extension, assessment of mastery, homework, morning work/do-now, extra practice, RTI group work, etc!
Use it for either beginning, middle and/or ending sound- you program it as you need- can use for all three!
*Great for centers, small group activity, guided reading ‘word work’ activity, RTI practice activity, etc.
*Supports and Aligns with Common Core Standard:
RF.K.2, RF.K.3, L.K.2
*To make the cards self-correcting…
Use small stickers (the incentive chart ones work great, or foil stars)
or mark with a marker (make sure it doesn’t bleed through)
where the answers are on the back of the cards
When students use clothespins to mark the answer, they can then flip the card over- if the clothespin is on the sticker/star/mark they know they got it right, but if not, they need to flip it back over and try again.
I like to use green, yellow & red markings & give my students those color clothespins. I use green for beg sound, yellow for middle & red for ending. If the clothespin color matches the color it touches on the back they know they got it right! You can have them do all three (give 3 clothespins) at once or start with just beg, move to ending, and then middle- or whatever works best for what you are working on at the time!
*Students can use either clothespins or paperclips to mark the answers or you can give them chips/counters/teddy bears/blocks, etc. to rest on the answer. You can provide an alternate set that has the answers for students to reference if you do not use clothespins and they can’t ‘flip’ it to check. They can also write the CVC word on the line provided!
*Cards can be independent of each other (if you want to focus on/practice a particular vowel sound), or put an entire set (including some of all vowels) on a binder ring. Students can flip through the ring and work on an entire set. You can even make sets with only particular vowels for students that need extra practice with identifying that vowel/medial sound.
*B&W Printable an be used as an extension activity/follow-up for center work or for other purposes as outlined above. You can also laminate them for re-use (w/ dry erase markers/crayons) or place w/in a page protector.
Great review for 'back to school' for older/advanced students or for throughout the year with younger students or those that need a bit more practice and review!
