Description

Your students need repeated practice with CVCe words to gain fluency and confidence in reading and writing. These CVCe Play Dough Mats are a great tool to use all year long! Students will work on mastering CVCe words and build fine motor skills in the process.

This set of play dough mats comes with 104 CVCe words. Each card is half of a page and features a CVCe word as well as a visual representation.

What if my students have trouble forming the letters? Won't they end up just playing in the center?

Many times when kids don't understand what to do, they will become distracted and off task. My phonics play dough centers come with a few tools to help students that don't know how to make the letters with their dough.

⇒ Alphabet Mat - The mat gives the students a one-page resource to see how they can form every letter of the alphabet. There is an upper-case and lower-case mat included. Each mat is also available in black and white or in color (the vowels are in red, the consonants are in blue).

⇒ Flash Cards - The flash cards can be placed on a ring and highlight each letter individually. These come in upper-case and lower-case options and are available in black and white.

Why do the CVCe cards not show how the letters can be formed with play dough?

I believe it is best for early readers to see the words as they would appear in text. While you can make letters out of play dough, they aren't exactly the same as what you would see in a book.

I'm not allowed to use play dough. Can I still utilize these in my classroom?

Yes! Since the cards do not show the letters being formed with play dough, you can still use the CVCe cards in a variety of ways. For example, the words are written in a "bubble" style, so you can have students write over the words on the cards with a dry erase marker. Or you can create tactile books with the cards by using glue, glitter, sand, etc.

How do you hold students accountable with this center?

I do not offer a worksheet with this resource. If you would like to have your students turn in something after completing the center, they could record the words they worked on, write sentences with the words, or even take pictures of their work if you have devices in your classroom.

Is every CVCe word included?

No. There are 104 words included which gives your students a wide variety to work with. I chose words that students would likely be familiar and could be represented visually.

Do you have more play dough resources?

Yes, they can be found in my store.

Do you have more CVCe resources?

Yes! I offer many CVCe resources. Look in my store to find word building mats, stamping worksheets, clip cards, and more!
