This Magic e (Silent e, Silent magic e) resource is designed to help first and second grade students work on CVCe. The included activities help students identify and practice this reading rule. Students develop their phonemic awareness as they work on any of the different activities. This resource can be used as task cards, for independent practice, centers, or as a workstation.

This resource includes six different activities.

Activity 1: Picture Sort

• Students look at the picture, think about the medial sound, and glue the picture in the correct column.
• 4 pages in color (long a/short a, long i/short i, long o/short o, long u/short u)
• 4 pages in black/white (a, i, o, u)
• Answer key is provided

Activity 2: Cut and Paste

• Students cut out the pictures and glue to the correct word.
• 4 pages in color (a, i, o, u)
• 4 pages in black/white (a, i, o, u)
• Answer key is provided.

Activity 3: Look and Spell #1

• Students look at the picture and correctly spell the word.
• 4 pages in color (mixture of vowels)
• 4 pages in black/white (mixture of vowels)
• Answer key is provided.

Activity 4: Look and Spell #2

• Students look at the picture and decide which vowel is needed to correctly spell the word.
• 4 pages in color (mixture of vowels)
• 4 pages in black/white (mixture of vowels)
• Answer key is provided.

Activity 5: Roll and Read

• Students roll the number cube and read the word under the corresponding number that’s on the number cube. Winner is the person who gets four in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.)

Activity 6: Sentences

• Students Use the word in the word bank to complete the sentences.
