These CVCe and CCVCe Word Family Printables
adapt Read America’s Sound Mapping technique in a FUN, hands-on way that is sure to engage your students and improve their reading skills! These responsive worksheets are a great way to teach your students to recognize long vowel sounds while making reading FUN!
Each sheet focuses on one long vowel using the CVCe and CCVCe patterns. The three activities on each sheet actively engage students through sound mapping; finding and writing words hidden in a picture; and selecting rhyming words.
This last activity in particular—identifying rhyming words—will challenge your students to actively read and listen for the target sounds in each word. It will also enable you to easily discern your students’ reading comprehension level. For example: do they recognize that "–ome" says something different in “dome” than it does in “some”? I have included CVC and CVCC words in these rhyming activities to give your students extra practice discerning the long vowel vs. short vowel sounds.
