( a little artistic license with the expression “de cabo a rabo”= “from one extreme to the other”, “from beginning to end”, “from head to toe”, etc.)
One of the challenges in the World Language classroom is how to get students--especially beginning students-- to start speaking in the target language. This variation of Inside/Outside Circles gets them talking (almost) right away. The activity is designed so that all the questions are ones that your students have an answer to because the questions are all about them. And they get to talk to numerous people in the process. The idea is to be as conversational as possible at their current level.
Benefits of this activity:
Differentiated instruction: students answer at their particular level, be it a one or two-word answer, or a complete sentences and, possibly, with some elaboration.
Within the activity each student will get to be the expert, the learner or an equal with their successive partners.
Lots and lots of repetitions!
This particular set of questions cover topics in most first level textbooks: what students like to do, where they go, weather, classes and schedules, etc. But while these are questions that beginners can answer, they are also great review for second-year and even third-year students. By the third year these questions could be conversation starters rather than the simple question and answer that the first year students would be expected to produce.
I will be adding more sets of questions in the next few weeks. Please check back! My kids always loved this activity. I hope yours will too!
