This is a great tool for differentiating instruction in your Social Studies classroom. The topic of this tic-tac-toe board is Cahokia Mounds - the great Native American city located in present-day southern Illinois.
In this activity students choose three activities from a total of nine activities. The activities chosen must make a "tic-tac-toe." I have also given extra credit to students for doing one additional activity. My students really enjoy this activity because it gives them choice. In the end, they have a greater appreciation for this interesting ancient society.
The product available for download is in Microsoft Word 97-2003 format (.doc), so it is completely editable. In other words, feel free to make it your own.
Activity topics include: Monks Mound, Woodhenge, the Stockade, and Mound 72. Since I teach near Cahokia Mounds, one activity option is to visit the mounds and write a report. I have also had students take a "virtual field trip" to the mounds and write a report for that actitivy option. Enjoy!
