"Calculate Those using Fractions" is a student puzzle book comprised of one hundred operation puzzles involving fractions. It serves to promote number and operation sense, along with mathematical reasoning and communication skills essential to every student’s mathematics education.
While similar to the entertaining and popular operation puzzles known as KenKen®, "Calculate Those..." puzzles have the added advantage of not being restricted to operating with whole numbers 1, 2, 3, ..., n, in which n denotes a puzzle’s dimension. This allows for the use of operation puzzles at various grade levels in which different number representations are being learned and to which the four basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) are being applied.
The first fifty "Calculate Those using Fractions" puzzles involve only the operations of addition and subtraction, while puzzles 51 through 70 involve only the operations of multiplication and division. The remaining thirty puzzles involve mixed operations. To allow for differentiated learning, each of these three sections offers puzzles of varying dimensions (3 x 3, 4 x 4, 5 x 5, and 6 x 6).
