This logic puzzle is a fun and challenging way to practice calculating momentum - great as a bell ringer, review, enrichment, or even extra credit.
The puzzle asks students to use clues to determine the mass and velocity of six carts and then calculate the momentum of each cart.
I designed this puzzle for my 9th graders, but I think middle school students will be successful with this as well, given varying levels of support as needed. The formula for momentum is simple: mass x velocity, and the numbers in the puzzle are all either whole numbers or a decimal to the tenth's place, so the math in this puzzle is not intimidating. Thus, sixth graders just learning some algebra could do this puzzle, even if they had not yet studied work as a physics concept.
I generally use the puzzles as enrichment, but I have also included them in my emergency sub plans.
