In grade 6, students develop an understanding of ratios and rates and how to use them to solve problems. Students learn about percent of a number using models as well as multiplication. As students become proficient in their understanding, they develop a number sense and the ability to visualize a model and perform mental calculations.
In this MATH-O, students use the fraction square model to formulate the concept of 100% and fraction pieces -- EIGHTHS and THIRDS -- to make the connection to percentages. The fraction model serves as a meaningful reference point for measurement comparison. Students will relate benchmark percentages of 12 1/2%, 25%, 37 1/2%, 50%, 62 1/2%, 75%,
87 1/2%, 33 1/3%, 66 2/3%, and 100% to their fraction equivalents.
