Use this as a fantastic cure-all for certain standards, like Calculating SPEED, that students need practice with!
It is a research-based way to reteach a complicated concept –one which can be presented simply, or as a difficult, 5-step process on Assessments. Do my Quick Review with Classroom Tested NO FAIL METHODs, and then, use one SLIDE everyday as a WarmUP for 8 days. Every SLIDE has specific “happy mark” reinforcement of critical steps in the NO FAIL METHOD– so that they remember to do them every time. Your modeling of the steps and happy mark reminds them to use the NO FAIL METHOD every time and they are “rewarded.”
I thought it silly at first, but it works! The questions begin somewhat basically, and build toward level 3 & 4 RIGOROUS--the type found on Standardized Assessments! (multiple variables, and steps, with tables/charts or diagrams to analyze) so they build confidence that if they follow the NO FAIL METHOD– they will always get these questions right!
The day’s slide has a SELF-Reflection, led by a Response Prompt. Studies show that Self-Reflection aids in a students long-term success, recall, and retention of a concept. After 8 days, students take a 10-question Quiz to see how they've done.
As always, I promise this is NOT Science Light, or a bunch of cutesy-fluff that requires a ga-zillion copies! It requires 1-2 pages for each student, for 2 weeks, depending on how large you want the slides to be– this should be fine (6/pg and 4 to a pg) It has been tested in my classroom for the last 8 years and revamped again and again, as the way the questions are presented on Assessments and Benchmarks has gotten more difficult.
AND– for FREE– I’m including my Periodic Table Game – one of many cool activities in my NEW Elements, Compounds, Metals SUPER SET!! (It has over 128 pages of Awesome Periodic Table LABs , GraphiQ Explain Frames, Choices BOARD, CARDS, and Fun Activities for 3 weeks!!)
Sincerely, Jana--Science Rocks with Smalley!
