This is a life skills math activity that requires the use of play money (dollars and change). Students will count out the beginning amount into their wallet (we used a box drawn on the desk). From that amount they are to give the cashier exact change for the products purchased. Finally, they will count the money remaining in their wallet and record the amount on the worksheet.
This may require students to exchange bills for coins or large bills for smaller, depending on how they count out their original wallet amount. If you want to increase the act of changing money (i.e. dollar bill for 4 quarters), change the starting amount.
