I have noticed that my double blocked Algebra I students are very dependent on their calculators, but they need practice with their calculator skills. They do not recognize the need to change a minus sign to a negative sign for some syntax errors. They do not always put negative numbers in parenthesis whenever they are substituting into formulas, resulting in sign errors, etc.
This quiz covers simplifying fractions, changing to mixed numbers, using the ANS key, using y= to factor integers, the use of various formulas, correcting by using the 2nd→Enter key, and using TBLSET to view tables efficiently.
This calculator skills baseline quiz takes me about 20 minutes to complete; I estimate students will need about 40 minutes. I will be writing 5-10 minute bell-work problem sets to reinforce these skills.
