Calculus Area Between Curves Introduction: Sketching and Set Ups
Before students even start determining the area between curves by integrating, they need help setting up the problems. This set of 16 problems has students analyze the problems, sketch the graph, and set up the integral to determine the area. Solving is optional and can be saved for a later date.
In most problems students will have to find the points of intersection between curves. Some problems are given as functions of y. There are three problems with trig functions.
Sketching is done in predetermined windows, so that a standard 10 by 10 window on a graphing calculator will have to be adjusted for optimum viewing of the area. This will let students view the functions in the best window to see the area between the curves with the given restrictions.
Answer keys are included as well as two blanks for you to use for problems you may want to emphasize in class. Answers to the integration problems are also included.
The format is a worksheet, but can easily be cut up to create Task or Station Cards.
