Why “board sessions”? You can only learn to dance by doing it. You can only learn to play football, or soccer by doing it. And you can only learn math by doing it. Unfortunately homework is, all too frequently, something that does not get done. These board sessions enable the student to do problems under your supervision. A major goal is to keep the student from getting bored during class. An active student is a student less likely to get bored. Either getting your students out of their seats and up to the board . . . or doing problems in their seats on white boards, increases active learning. Our board sessions will help prevent a student from “bored dumb.” (These calculus sessions can also be used as homework and review for the student who needs more individual practice and a written explanation.)
The review/enrichment sheets in our Calculus Board Sessions series should be quite helpful to many students and teachers. For students, the sessions cover the major topics presented in a typical AB Advanced Placement Calculus course in a year . . . which happens to be fairly equivalent to what a college student would learn in one quarter of Calculus I and the beginnings of a 2nd quarter. They range from reviewing Pre-Calculus concepts, through developing the derivative concept, to integrating by using partial fractions and trigonometric substitution to integrate . . . though there is only one problem of each of those topics in the entire set. Nevertheless, HOW to do the problems is presented as opposed to just giving the answers to the Board Session problems posed. One caveat, they do NOT delve into the more theoretical and involved “Calculator Allowed” portion of the AP test. (For the unaware, the AP Calculus tests are divided into 4 parts No Calculator Multiple Choice and Free Response . . . and Calculator Allowed Multiple Choice and Free Response.) For the teacher in addition to getting the students out of their seats and to a place where you can: A). note your students’ progress (or lack of it) and B). help each other through rough spots without being accused of copying/cheating on a test - the problems in the board sessions will also be quite helpful for: class openers or closers, quiz bowl practice or quiz bowl questions, math enrichment, teacher-led discussions on getting the answer efficiently, alternative test & quiz questions, and SAT – ACT - Proficiency Test prep.
