Here's a more detailed look at each daily routine:


Begin with the students gathered on the carpet with their calendar binders. Use the “Minute Math” fluency cards to practice quickly and accurately identifying the given concept. You may wish to select one/two fluency rings for this activity. This is intended to be a relatively quick activity. Simply flash the card for no more than three seconds. You can, then, have the students all whisper the answer or show the number with their fingers. Remember to elicit in depth reasoning through high order questioning.


Direct the students’ attention to your Days in School growing number line, ten frames and/or tally table. If you have included these sheets in your calendar binder, the students will complete them as you complete them on the board. Remove a sticky note from the “growing” number line or hundreds chart to reveal the number of days in school. Once you get to a five, the students will see a circle around the number. Count all of the circled numbers by 5’s. Add a tally mark to the “Tally Table” chart. Remind the students that five is special, and that when they see a circle on the number line, you will cross the tallies to make a group of five. Once you have a group of five, write the appropriate number in the box below the group. Count the tally marks by 5’s. Count on for the ones. Add a dot to the ten frame using a bingo dotter, marker, crayon or sticker. Count the ten frames by 10’s.


Project the appropriate month on the board, or simply use your wall calendar display. Introduce today’s date, and have the students fill in or trace the number. You may also wish to review today, yesterday and tomorrow. ** Includes editable calendar pages, so that you can add the numbers for your students to trace. **


Project the appropriate “Weather Watcher” graph onto the board. Record today’s weather on the graph. Remember to ask a few detailed questions about the graph each day, such as but not limited to: Which one has more? Which one has less? How many does one type have than another? How many more are needed for two to be equal?


The monthly calendar math pages increase in difficulty as the year progresses. I suggest projecting this onto the board, or enlarging and laminating a copy. The students will use a fine point dry erase marker to complete this page. As the year progresses, you may even wish to have a student lead the class as they complete the enlarged or projected version. One thing to remember is that I do not complete this page every day of the month. Most weeks, I complete the “Calendar Math” page two/three times.


Choose a number for the day. In the beginning, stick to numbers from 1-5, and then 1-10, and so on. The “Number Sense Number Mat” will work with numbers up to 20. Once you have chosen a number, complete the number mat using a fine point dry erase marker. Show the number on the ten frame, with tally marks, on the dice and domino(es) by breaking the number into a combination of numbers, and with base ten blocks. For this portion of the mat, the students will identify the number in the tens place and ones place. Have them color one rod for each ten and one unit for each one. For the odd/even activity, the students will begin by writing the number 1 in the top left hand corner. Then, they will move down to the bottom strip and write a 2 under the 1. Next, they’ll move back to the top and write a 3 next to the 1. Then, back down to the bottom to write a 4 under the 3. They’ll continue working form top to bottom until they reach today’s number. If all of the numbers have a buddy, the number is even. If the last number does not have a buddy, the number is odd. Complete the remainder of the number mat, ending with breaking the number into two parts. Remember, you do not need to complete each box on the number mat. Begin small, and only complete a few boxes of the number mat. Feel free to skip any boxes that you feel may be too difficult for your students. Sometimes, I alternate this activity with the “Calendar Math” sheet.


Have the students touch and count the numbers to 100. Begin small with counting to 10, then counting to 20, and so on. After the students have become successful, set a timer for one minute. The goal is to beat the timer!
