California #48 "Bundle of Ten/More" Activities
A state I have never been to, California, but my grand-daughter lives there and seems to love it. My brother and his wife have been out there several times but not I, I would love to go to Disneyland but hate to leave my beloved Louisiana.
I began with North Carolina because that's my first request from a needy teacher for the beginning of the year. I began this process because I was asked too and I did the states I was asked for and now I'm on my way to doing all 50. This state makes #33 and it has been a long, long chore by I am doing this as a favor to all my student teachers out there plus all my teacher friends I have made over the years. It is just my way to pay it forward. With the help of TPT I hope to get it done soon.
I never seem to know where inspiration is going to come and in my case, people gave up years ago trying to figure me out. My inspiration comes from my background, genealogy research, college classes, my obsessive reading, my obsessive internet work, my medical disability, my own class teaching spanning world history to American history to Louisiana history to my love of Texas history, my love of the history channel, my memories of my own history classes in junior/high school, my own history professors in college, my degrees in college – art, history, technology, journalism – you sort of get the picture. I'm just loony to say the very least. Some come from my art degree, some from working with my ELA teacher friends…
- Magazine Covers – allows students to artistically create something about the chapter, story, book they just read. It is a simple grading activity and can be used over and over again.
- Puzzle Piece – allows the student to choose something about a county in their state and illustrate/tell/explain it and show off their knowledge.
- Terms Word Search– allows each student to search for words in a timed activity. I always gave extra credit based on the speed students turned them in. Somedays it was simply 4-3-2-1 points other days I upped the point totals.
- Maze – same with the maze. Fastest gets 4 points, next gets 3 points and so on.
- Bingo Game – are always fun and easy to grade. They can take the whole class period or not. Points are awarded on extra credit based on who Bingos first, then second then – so on. Words maybe called in up or down order so that students have no way of knowing which it will be. Call list is included.
- Word Scramble – are always fun and easy to grade. Students get their chance to unscramble the letters of this simple words used in history.
- ABCs of your State History – are always fun and easy to grade. You never know what students will select but have always been intrigued. I reward points based on how many they get right.
- My State's Bucket List – these are always fun and every student's list will be different so be prepared to the unusual.
- Beyond Our State Flag – History related fact questions for any time are always simple little bell-ringers for any state.
- What Would You Ask – These are questions about the chapter/story/text student might ask and students must answer – a great review.
But 50 states worth of these ideas seems like a lot of work and with each one being tweaked for teachers in that state. Each one takes about 3-4 hours to creating and spell checking before I can post them.
These are not expensive items but can be a real lifesaver to anyone that needs it. So, here is one of those time-killers as needed from MrE's History Emporium of TPT fame.
By the way this idea was requested by a first year teacher and as a new teacher we all know what this means on the first day/days of school. I've been there, done that…several times at several different schools.
As a Louisiana teacher, I can and will help anyone who just asks. Part of that is built into my DNA after years of have student teachers in and out of my classrooms. There are many teachers who have helped me and it's only fair that I 'pay it forward' as long as God lets me.
