This download contains everything you need to read, research, and write about the California Gold Rush. Here are the descriptions about the individual products:
California Gold Rush Mining Journal (with and without clip art):
I have my students create a mining journal as a culminating project after we finish learning about the California 49ers coming with the dream to find gold. I have them become a 49er and pretend to travel across the country, imagining the life the miners led. This journal is a narrative that shows their understanding of the time period, the difficulties that miners faced, and also practices their descriptive writing skills.
I recommend the picture book Gold Fever to show how hard life was for the miners.
California Men of the Gold Rush
This year it's time to go deeper into our Social Studies units, so I created in depth nonfiction Reading Passages about the California Famous Men of the Gold Rush time period. We will be studying, specifically John Sutter, John Bidwell, James Beckwourth, Jedediah Smith, and John C. Fremont.
This product has 3 sections:
First, each person has their own passage, multiple choice assessment, and a strategy grid to assist students into looking closely at the text. Answer keys are also provided.
Then, the 5 men are compared through 4 pages of multiple choice questions and short responses. An answer key is also included for the multiple choice assessment.
Finally, there are 5 thinking maps included in the product that can be used for individual students, groups to work together, or as a whole class brainstorm.
I hope this helps you!
