This is a project I do every year with my 4th graders to wrap up our Gold Rush unit. This is by far my favorite social studies topic, and I love having the students show what they learned in a fun and creative way. I also tied in persuasive writing with the project so that we could knock out two standards with one project.
The students are required to create a brochure trying to convince people to come to California for the gold rush. The brochure has 3 pages:
1. Information about the gold rush
2. How to mine for gold
3. Ways to travel to California
There is a bonus extra credit page where the students label a map of CA for their readers.
I have included a reproducible page for you to glue inside the brochure so that the students will have a guide for their title, drawing, and their information. Also included is a writing guide with explicit expectations for the project. Students can check off these expectations as they meet them so that they will know when they have completed the page.
