PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

California Gold Rush: A Close Reading Passage for UPPER ELEMENTARY - This single passage pack is about events surrounding moving westward to California for the Gold Rush. See a list of topics and terms below. It was written with 4th graders in mind, but it can easily be used with fifth grade and beyond.

The passage is sized for interactive notebooks. They print 2 on a page and can easily be glued in a social studies notebook. Even if you don't use interactive notebooks, you can still use these passages. The passages will just be a half sheet size, but you won't glue them in a notebook. :-)

The push today in the elementary classroom is to teach kids the skills of close reading; focus on and analyze a shorter passage and hold the details of the passage under a microscope to really examine it. This passage works great for teaching a short reading lesson while also introducing a social studies topic.

===========================

If you are a 4th grade teacher in GA, this passage will help you meet the following standard: Describe territorial expansion with emphasis on California (Gold Rush and the development of mining towns)

It will also work well for other states that cover the same standard.

This paragraph passage includes information about the following terms:

✱How/when California joined the US (given as background info)
✱John Sutter
✱James Marshall
✱Discovering Gold
✱Prospectors
✱Forty-Niners
✱Boomtowns and Ghost Towns
✱Panning for Gold
✱How women earned money
✱More

============================

There are lots of ways to implement this Westward Expansion passage into your lessons.

✓Use in a mini lesson to introduce the topic.
✓Easily leave for a sub because discussion questions are included.
✓Incorporate it into a guided reading lesson.
✓Choose a reading skill to focus on using the events that occurred in the passage.
For example, focus on cause/effect relationships.
✓Use as a review of the topic before state testing.
✓Use it in your classroom however it works best.

*********Please realize BEFORE you buy that I did not use any clip art in this pack because I wanted the focus to be on the words and not images. Also, there are no written student questions, but suggested teacher discussion questions are included.***********

======================================

You can also purchase this close reading passage in a social studies interactive notebook bundled pack of notebooks 1-2. The bundled pack comes with 34 close reading passages and 34 interactive flippable activities. You only get interactive flippables when you buy the notebook back, not when you buy the single passages.
