Product Description
This end-of-unit project is perfect for 4th grade students who are learning about the California Gold Rush and the subsequent road to statehood.

Here is the overview that is on the handout--
You are there! You are to pretend that you were a person who lived through the struggle to make California a state. There were seven key events to led to California becoming a state, and you decided to keep a scrapbook of artifacts that you collected from each event.

Major Events:
• Trailblazers Move West into California
• Pioneers start heading west in covered wagons
• The Bear Flag Revolt
• The Mexican-American War
• The Gold Rush
• California’s changing economy
• The Monterey Convention

From the above events, you are to come up with three artifacts that represent what happened during or at each event. For example for “Trailblazers Move West into California,” you might draw a picture of a beaver pelt, make a map showing what trail they took, and a letter from Jose Maria Echendia asking them to leave California.

A rubric is included.
