Are your students learning about the geography and climate of California? Use this pack as a culminating project or as a springboard into a new unit.
Designed as PBL (project based learning), students can work in teams or independently to research and present their findings in a news report style speech.
Included in this pack is an assignment sheet that gives students and overview to their task. It also includes 4 field guides for each of the main regions of California, with text and graphics to help students learn about the region they are studying. I have also written a simplified text about the region to add to each field guide for struggling students (it is the last page in each section).
There is a circle map graphic organizer for students to take notes on their research, as well as field study questions, to check for understanding of their reading. Once students have completed the research portion, they can use their findings to write a news report to present to the class. I have included a guide to help students organize their report. There is also a region flip book for students to present their learning.
I have also included two input charts that teachers can use to introduce the 4 regions to their students. The input charts include graphics and words. Many teachers copy the image with pencil onto large format paper by projecting it from a document camera. Then they trace the picture/words with marker in front of their students as they explain the content. This gives the illusion to the students that the teachers are drawing it in front of them. It is a very engaging way to impart information.
I have included a chant based on the four regions, which gives students the opportunity to learn about the regions in a poem format. There is also a vocabulary portion included. Which allows student to study some of the key vocabulary from their research more in depth.
Usually at the end of the project, I have students create a diorama or model to accompany their news report.
