With this 20 Google Slides resource, your students can research 13 iconic California state symbols, including the flag and the Great Seal of California. This social studies resource has web and video links for each symbol for the student to use to research how each symbol was adopted or why it is important to California’s history.

This California History resource aligns with the fourth grade California History curriculum in which students learn all about the Golden State.

Though many tasks can be done with paper and pencil, doing the same task through Google Apps can present greater opportunities for student learning. Google Slides can embed links to useful videos; Google Slides can enhance understanding with color diagrams, pictures, and photographs; animation can also be embedded and use to demonstrate a concept. Most importantly, students are using 21st-century learning tools that will prepare them for eventual online standardized testing.

This digital resource has been paired with Common Core State Standard for English Language Arts for grade 4 so that you can integrate it with Language Arts. The Interactive Digital Notebook includes the most iconic symbols of California:

♦ Assign the Google Slides file to your class via Google Classroom (or email). Each student receives a copy and then begins researching.

♦ There are two Preparation slides to show the students how to research and cite evidence. There’s also another slide on instructions on how to navigate the slides, type text, and move objects.

♦ The Table of Contents is hyperlinked to all the slides for easy navigation. On each slide, there is one web link and one video link to the symbol.

Please make sure your district/school/classroom has access to safeyoutube or YouTube.

Students use each link to take notes to answer:

1. When was the symbol adopted?

2. Why it was chosen or what it symbolizes or why it’s important to California’s history

3. List three interesting facts about the symbol.

♦ Once all the symbols have been researched, students construct a timeline of when each symbol was adopted in California. Students also can take a 15 question TRUE/FALSE quiz on the symbols. Finally, students choose a symbol that they believe BEST represent California as a state and write an opinion piece.
