What educators are saying

What a great resource. I love how there are links that help the students with the research. This was a great project for them to work on in groups or as individuals.
This was an excellent end of year Social Studies project to review California state symbols. I loved that it was digital too so my students could do additional online research.

Description

With this 20 Google Slides™ resource, your students can research 13 iconic California state symbols, including California's flag and the Great Seal of California. This social studies resource has web and video links for each symbol for the student to use to research how each symbol was adopted or why it is important to California’s history.

This California History resource aligns with the fourth grade California History curriculum in which students learn all about the Golden State.

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Assign the Google Slides file to your class via Google Classroom (or email). Each student receives a copy and then begins researching.
  2. There are two Preparation slides to show the students how to research and cite evidence.
  3. There’s also another slide on instructions on navigating the slides, typing text, and moving objects.
  4. The Table of Contents is hyperlinked to all the slides for easy navigation. One web link on each slide and one video link to the symbol on the slide.

Please make sure your district/school/classroom has access to safeyoutube or YouTube.

Students use each link to take notes to answer:

  1. When was the symbol adopted?
  2. Why it was chosen or what it symbolizes, or why it’s important to California’s history
  3. List three interesting facts about the symbol.
  4. Once all the symbols have been researched, students construct a timeline of when each symbol was adopted in California.
  5. Students also can take a 15 question TRUE/FALSE quiz on the symbols.
  6. Finally, students choose a symbol that they believe BEST represents California as a state and write an opinion piece.
