This Call Number Breakout was created for primary students. My goals for creating this Breakout were to:
*introduce primary students to elements of breakouts while reviewing library skills after a unit on call numbers
*finish a breakout within the constraints of a fixed media center schedule (lesson plus checkout during each weekly visit)
*incorporate popular areas in the media center into the game to capitalize on their media center prior knowledge to enable success
*build community and team work among primary students
This PowerPoint presentation (18 slides) includes all materials that you need to customize the breakout to your media center. The first 5 slides in the PowerPoint are for you to present the scenario and activity to students. The next 4 slides are an overview of how the breakout should run, as well as directions for how to prepare the materials and the media center for the activity. The remaining 9 slides contain materials, such as clues, hint cards and a reflection worksheet, for you to print and use in the activity. You will need to purchase pretend money, 4 small toolboxes, 4 word locks, 4 pencil pouches in different colors, and 4 key locks. With the exception of the word locks, I found all the other supplies at the Dollar Tree.
I hope that you and your students have fun reviewing call numbers with this breakout!
