Product Description

This unit provides an introduction to call numbers which focuses on how call numbers are created, how they are used, and why they are used. Even as many of us move to “genrefying” our collections, there still must be order in those sections. Additionally, as long as we have print materials in our Media Centers and school libraries, students need to understand the call number system and the specific sections which define them. I typically complete this unit before working on OPAC instruction so they understand what they are looking at in that program.

There are a variety of activities to introduce and teach the concept of call numbers. Students are introduced to the organization of the library through either a video, The Lure of the Library, or a book, The Shelf Elf Helps Out. They will then work through a series of activity pages that teach the parts of a call number and shelving rules. Following that are multiple activities that allow students to practice identifying the sections of a call number, sorting books by call numbers, creating call numbers, and finally locating individual call numbers on the library’s shelves.
